Agnes Martin’s work has been defined as an "essay in discretion on inward-ness and silence". Although she is often considered or referred to as a minimalist, Martin considered herself an abstract expressionist.
Her remark about being an Abstract Expressionist is very apt in that it creates a large space in which an abstract artist can prosper. Gary believes that the tighter the boundary of a discipline the greater the limit on an artist’s personal expression.
Agnes Martin’s humility, sensitivity and absorption in her work are all attributes that Gary deeply values and brings to his own life and art.
